How Nominal Ran Its Biggest-Ever Clearance Sale With the Profit Agent
Biggest Sale Ever
and their second highest revenue-generating sale ever pulled together in 4 days
31%
reduction in clearance inventory
10% lift to AOV
with an average of $30 in incremental revenue per upsell redeemed
I had days to prep our biggest sale of the year, weeks into the job. I set up upsells in one conversation and I could ask it anything about the sale as it ran, without pulling a report. It was a huge time saver and helped me set things up fast.

About Nominal
Nominal is a DTC jewelry brand built on meaning: birth flowers, custom name pieces, and faith and heritage collections designed to carry personal identity and be worn every day. Retention is central to the business, which is why the numbers behind a sale matter as much as the sale itself.
The Challenge
A 3PL migration exposed the real scale of Nominal's surplus stock, which the previous provider had struggled to organise or report on. Ian Park, weeks into the role, and the team pulled a site-wide clearance sale together in four days. Three questions ran through it:
-
How do we move more overstock?
Inventory and upsell recommendations
-
What should we mark down next?
Products ranked by sales velocity, inventory, and cash tied up
-
How is the sale tracking?
On-demand answers and a live performance dashboard
The harder part was clearing stock without giving away margin: how deep to discount, whether upsells needed their own discount, and which products to exclude on margin, stock, or weak demand.
The Solution
Before
- Export sales and inventory manually
- Reconcile product-level performance by hand
- Decide markdowns from spreadsheets
- Work out upsell pairings offer by offer
- Check multiple systems during the sale
With the Profit Agent
- Ask the question in plain language
- Get a ranked decision list back
- Approve or adjust the recommendation
- Get the pairings and pricing recommended, ready to set live
- Spend the time acting rather than preparing analysis
"I'd prompt the agent, then go work on the rest of the sale, come back and approve or give feedback, and it'd be live by EOD from a simple chat."

Run it on your store with the Profit Agent
Use this prompt template to build a dashboard for your sale:
Build me a dashboard to track my [sale name] sale, running from [start date] to [end date]. I want to see revenue against a target of [$ target], units sold, AOV, and contribution profit, all compared to my last sale rather than a normal week. Update it daily and flag anything that's off pace.
Use this prompt template to get the baseline insights for your next sale:
I'm about to run a [sale type] sale across [collection / whole catalogue]. Rank my products by sell-through and days of inventory cover, show me which ones are overstocked, and recommend a markdown for each between [min %] and [max %]. Keep my best sellers at the lower end. Then tell me which products are the best upsell candidates to move that stock.
Upsell pairings from the purchase data
The whole set worked out in one conversation, live the same day. The Profit Agent prioritised products where inventory exposure and sales evidence made an upsell commercially useful, and recommended holding them at the current sale price rather than discounting again.
- · Guardrails set once. Thin-margin lines, made-to-order products, and anything already in the cart were excluded from every recommendation.
- · Refreshed on what converted. As the sale ran, the agent flagged which pairings were working and which to swap out, including pairing the men's and women's versions of the same piece.
Answers on demand, without pulling a report
The call that moved stock. Mid-sale, the agent ranked every sale product by units-sold percentile, remaining inventory, and cash tied up, and pointed at the next markdowns. Minutes instead of a manual export and query.
- · Markdown tiers built in Lifetimely, using sell-through and days of inventory cover: a 20% to 70% range, best sellers at the low end, exceptions for badly overstocked lines.
- · One of many. Units per transaction against the last sale, daily tracking, and a "Clearance Sale Performance" dashboard keeping the numbers in one place.
The Results
Clearance inventory down 31%
with upsells moving hundreds of units of overstocked product
10% lift to AOV
with an average of $30 in incremental revenue per upsell redeemed
The biggest clearance sale
in the brand's history and their second highest revenue-generating sale ever
All pulled together in four days
Key Takeaways
- · Ask for the decision, not the data. The agent ranks the options and puts the recommendation in front of you to approve.
- · The pairings, the pricing and the exclusions come out of your own purchase and margin data, worked out in a conversation rather than a pairing spreadsheet.
- · Margin, stock cover and demand shape what gets recommended, so clearing inventory does not mean discounting blind.
